In France, the cicadas symbolise hot summer days, holidays, happiness, joy and Provence. In June, July and August, the summer months of the Northern hemisphere, they sing all day long in the Pine forests of Provence. Holiday makers and locals cherish this little creature who loves life so much that it spends all its life singing. A famous French poet, Jean de La Fontaine, wrote a fable (see below) of her life and nearly all houses in the South of France have their little "good luck" cicada near their front door, under the pergola or inside the house. Have you got one ? Here is the "Olive" cicadas. They were born in Vallauris, where the Gullo family has hand-painted their ceramic body with a beautiful olives and lemon design. |
